News and comment

Welcome to the Your Icons website, which celebrates the ten collections in the West Midlands designated of national importance by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. These collections are looked after by the twelve museums, libraries and archives featured on this website (two of the collections are cared for jointly by more than one institution). Most of the icons can either be viewed on public display or by prior appointment (please check the websites of the museum, library or archive for opening hours, and please ring or email the institution first if you are unsure if the item you want to see is on public display). The Your Icons project also includes events run by the partners, and two small temporary exhibitions which are available free of charge for booking in community venues. If you would like to enquire about booking one of these, please contact the administrator via the contact page. Watch out for details of forthcoming events in the New Year which will be posted here.

The website received 348,000 hits and 59,000 page views in the first six months since it was launched in April 2007. All the collections are now represented on the site, and new icons are constantly being added. We are currently reviewing the site, and plan to make some changes to make it more accessible and user-friendly. What changes would you like to see? Linda has commented: “How does the opening of a new window for the large image sit with accessibility guidelines which usually say the opening a new window is not good for accessibility and also if you are going to do that you should warn the user?” Thanks, Linda – we will certainly look again at this. Have you any comments to make on the site? Have you any favourite items that you would like to see featured that are not on the website yet? Please let know.
