This is one of 39 fragments of an early Qur’an. It is in Arabic of Kufic script and is dated 3rd century AH/9th century AD.
The literal meaning of the word Qur’an is ‘the recitation’. It is the central religious text of Islam. Arabic was the language in which the Qur’an was revealed by the Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad outside the city of Mecca in the early 7th century AD, and the script in which it was later written down.
Kufic was one of two scripts that existed at the beginning of the Islamic era. It was used to write down the earliest Qur`anic texts.
The Islamic calendar starts from 1 AH, the year of the flight of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. In dates it is often abbreviated as AH, which stands for Anno Hegirae.
