| The People's Olympiad |
The People’s Olympiad of 1936 was planned for Barcelona in opposition to the official Olympics to be held in Berlin. The newly elected, left wing, Popular Front government in Spain decided to boycott the Berlin Olympics and host their own games after their election in February 1936. Many of the athletes were sent by trade unions, workers' clubs and associations, socialist and communist parties and left wing groups. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War just as the games were to begin, the alternative games were cancelled. The poster is held within the archives of the TUC held at the MRC. This image is part of the archive of the Shipping Federation held at the MRC. The Centre holds mainly national records of the unions and therefore many of the photographs and images held at the MRC show national (and in this instance, international) events rather than regional ones.
