| The mother town of the Potteries |
A map of Burslem commissioned by pottery manufacturer Enoch Wood in 1816. Burslem is known as the Mother Town of the Potteries, and is one of six that make up today's city of Stoke-on-Trent. The town was linked to the ports of Liverpool and Hull via the Trent and Mersey Canal, and its wares were exported across the world. This map is partially based on the recollections of local men John Lovat, John Fletcher and a number of others who were more than 80 years old. It shows the layout of Burslem and surrounding areas just before its boom began, and before its canal, turnpike roads and market house were built in the mid to late 18th century. The following is written on the reverse of the map: "Old Burslem to 1760. In the year 1816 Enoch Wood gave Ł3 to Mr. McPhail to put the town on a scale for the within sketch."
