| Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Shottery |
One of the most instantly recognisable buildings in the world, Anne Hathaway’s is the quintessential English country cottage, with its timber frame and thatched roof. It was identified as the home of Shakespeare’s future wife, Anne Hathaway, in 1795, and remained in the Hathaway family until 1892 when it was purchased by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Much of the charm of this architectural gem on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon comes from the unspoilt surroundings of its traditional cottage garden and from the old orchard which lies behind the house. This and its romantic association of being the place where Shakespeare wooed his future wife makes it an essential attraction for visitors. Images of the cottage and its interior have decorated many postcards and souvenirs of Shakespeare-land for over two centuries. Institute: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Your Comments (1)

| Anne Hathaway's is just one of five beautiful and fascinating Shakespeare Houses in and around Stratford-upon-Avon. It is also participating in UK TV History's 'Britain's Best' and has so far recevied 660 online votes. http://uktv.co.uk/history/britainsbest The site has a lot to offer with a stunning orchard, tree garden and a wonderful cottage garden containing traditional vegetables. The gift shop also has a wide range of gifts available, including home-grown plants from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust's nursery. This Christmas the cottage will be enjoying a 'Victorian Christmas' on Friday 14 December 4-7pm, Sat 15/Sun 16 December 10am-4pm. The cottage will be decorated throughout and Santa will also be making a special appearance! |
