The West Midlands is diverse in many ways: socially, economically and culturally.  Its industrial base has attracted migrants over many years; from its rural hinterland, from elsewhere in Britain and across the world.

Over time, varied communities have developed identities that reflect their uniqueness and also their aspirations for a better life together.  Unfortunately, tensions and stresses have also emerged, social injustice exists and true social cohesion remains a worthy if difficult aspiration.  Yet every day witnesses hope, as encapsulated in the following image.

“Lunch Break at Dudley and Dowell Foundry 1972” captures positive aspects of life in the West Midlands [Birmingham City Archives MS 2294, copyright Paul Hill].  Whatever problems may have occurred inside or outside this factory [and remember that this scene is just four years after the infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech and one year after a controversial Immigration Act], these two workers demonstrate their common humanity.  Within the turmoil and frenetic activity of factory life, they share a moment of peace and calm, and offer an example to us all.

This image is taken from the extensive collections of documentary photographers held by Birmingham Archives & Heritage.  The work of Vanley Burke, George Hallett, Paul Hill, Terry Lo and many others reveal varied aspects of life in the West Midlands.  The hopes, concerns, experiences and influences of many communities are recorded and all bear witness to the strength and potential of the people within the West Midlands.
